I was listening to a sermon by Rick Warren when my kids (aged 5 year old and 21 month old then) walked in. I was enjoying the sermon which was talking about God’s timing so much and I didn’t feel like pausing it for later so I let it play on.

He got started about what to do when you are waiting and one of the things he suggested was to call on God’s promises and he mentioned there were 6000 promises in the bible.

‘6000 promises in the Bible’ my daughter exclaimed. ‘That’s a lot of promises. I don’t even know one promise mama’ she continued.

I smiled. I hadn’t realised that she was listening. I used the opportunity to go over some of the verses we had done together, hi-lighting the promises in those verses. It made me realise that sometimes making kids memorise or cram things without explaining does absolutely nothing for them. They repeat and repeat like parrots and it is cute, but not really useful for them. And if it is not useful, then why are we bothering?

I also felt sad. Not for her as I am going to teach her God’s promises, but for the other people (old and young) out there who do not know how much God wants to be with them, to help them, to bless them. Who read the bible but fail to see and believe all God’s promises for them. Believing that the promises are not for them but for other more worthy people.

Sadly, some people don’t even read their bibles. They listen to summaries from their preachers, summaries that have so much colour and salt that they are nowhere near the original.

It is all written down in the bible. We just need to open it and read about all God’s promises for us, for ourselves. 6000 + promises, just for you, imagine that!

Some of my favourite bible promises!

Jer 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Psalms 23:1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

Psalms 27:1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

John 16:33 I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
